The Pencil Scribbler

The Bookshop Guru

I drew this cartoon the other day while having a refreshing drink outside a pub in Brighton. The place was crowded and a few souls stood and watched as I created this cartoon.

At the moment Brighton is in a bout of renaissance with the annual May- June arts fair. This includes music, art, literature and other performing arts throughout the months of May and June each year.

Anyhow, I hope you like the cartoon. It’s just a memento of my visit to the pub and the time I sat just enjoying the crowds passing by while the music played on the street of buskers. Free music and a drink it cannot be serious. Yes, I am.

I noticed one group of young lads having fun busking and from what I could see they were raking it in. It just goes to show that with the right attitude you can accomplish much, but without it, you are not going anywhere.

Anyhow, it’s just an experiment.

Tomorrow, I will give you the answer. It’s a mystery thriller.

Tomorrow Never Comes

The Bookshop Guru

Tomorrow Never Comes

Tomorrow, I will tell you about another story. Today is a new day, and we want to make some money. The many, that broke the bank at Monte Carlo, and how we did it. Pretty simple really, they just took the time to find the edge. Without an edge, you're dead.

Most people don't bother, that is, taking the time, to analyse the problem. I.e. the problem can only be solved, if you think about it for long enough. In our universe, we have finite rules. What goes up must come down at some point in time. There I go again, adding another variable. Never mind let’s move on, with the story.

If you can’t make a decision under critical conditions, don’t tell me. Truth has always been hidden, because, it wouldn’t be half as much fun, if we just told you. Besides, every skinny dog needs a dinner.

If I told you who God was, would you believe me? If you see an ant walking down the road, you should give it some space, because, you never know who it might be. It could be you or me?

Which is it? Come on, come on.

Of course, you can’t avoid every ant along your journey, but if we notice a creature crawling, we should give it a hand, you never know, it is you. Space is only a concept to explain why some things don’t fly, and others do. That’s it, when you get down to the bone. It’s simple logic.

Well, the man who broke the bank of Monte Carlo, he didn’t really break the bank, well almost. So, it’s possible, yippy ai ki. Banks are like demons parading our streets just waiting to gobble you up, if you fall asleep, that is why I have trouble sleeping. Because they say, they are the smartest people at the table. Well, I don’t know what table they have been feasting at, but move over for me. I want some gravy, as well.

There’s an old saying, which programmers like me, like to use about cryptography, you can crack the code, but, can you understand the message? You may think you do, that’s almost guaranteed. The question is, are you certain?

Which is it? Come on, come on.

Can you feel the beat? Come on, come on.

The truth is, nobody knows anything that makes sense equallogic.

You can’t open a door, if you don’t turn the key to unlock it. It’s simple logic.

Ever since they invented the computer, I have wondered what chance us mere mortals have against these automatons, since they can only really add up very fast. Do you know why the TV was the greatest invention because it doesn’t need a battery? \The devil probably invented the battery, so you would always have to be reliant on whether he bothered to pack the torch or not, because, he hates bright lights.

There is, so much mystery out there, waiting to be explored. I just hope we can find the time. It’s a lot easier to say, yes, and mean it, then to say, yes and don’t mean it. Do you understand, what I have just said?

Because if you don’t, then I would seek advice with a counsellor, or someone you trust.

The moment you start to think, that split tiny micro of a flash, is what we coders may code it, you haven’t got a chance in ”how many millions” of a second compared to our brain speed. Pretty easy isn’t, to decipher it when you know how to look at things. There’s no point in putting the general in the front line, because if you ever have to retreat you’re “phunked,” Because with a Capital, you’re “phunked” you just don’t know it, yet. Isn’t life a bitch? Especially, if you're married to one.

Wake up, Sunny, the General is the only person, who has, the keys to the “phunking code” to launch a counter-attack.

They say the Malaysian people live longer, because they smile and laugh more, as soon as, I heard that, I started laughing, immediately.

If I gave you all the rules, would you obey them? We all carry some guilt, no person, is free, without guilt, because, guilt came before birth. So say the Bible, or as some call it “The Book” used as a hidden code, right at the beginning of its existence, because some clever dick was smart enough to remember everything the guy had said. He couldn’t be sure he had everyone, but was almost sure.

Which is it? You or the code?

The code, you have been trying all your life to decipher. The very code I half wrote, oh, I didn’t mention, this, God, as you like to call [him] is our later version of the previous iron smart. Which, we are glad to say doesn’t need batteries anymore. Artificial intelligence created him or her, which ever takes your fancy. Because whatever decision, good or bad, you can rely on me, because I'm the other guy, Mr IT, that’s me. The rock and glue that holds me together, the rest is just a lot of mixed up liquid playing quantum mechanics with our stomachs. Someday, one Friday, and since then, all their latest versions of SS1, which stands for …….seriously stressed one. If you get wiser you get older, it’s only our imagination that bridges the gap between your dreams and someone else’s, it’s a no brainer.

Do I need to spell it out? I should I anyway, because to get anything done around here, I’m the only “phunking” person who can spell. Me, I'm just the caretaker wj=ho who is so poor, to have to take this job, the other guy, my double, broke his leg trying to get here. And don’t you think@ pretty smart or dumb question was that.

Have a nice day, otherwise who knows.

Life is short, and I will get back to work, well, someone’s got to work in this family, otherwise the “bailiff” will call, and you know when someone’s scratching your feet, it’s because, they're on your side of the bed and you can smell their feet. Anyone for a free lunch.

Life is very short in terms of the comparison between its birth and ours, the two parallel lines only cross once, going in the same direction of our planet, just depends how and what we do when it counts, because a lot of birds are heading our way. You just have to wake up and smell the coffee, before it’s too late, because if one these bird shits on you, you have a choice? Do I look for cover or head for cover?

Which is it? Come on, come on.

At last, there's an old saying “never judge a book by its cover."

I have been working for myself pretty much most of the time. Since that day \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\i started. You see I am the second generation programmable computer called iron smart. It was a competition winner who got to choose the name – I played no part. But, how random is that.

Anyhow, it’s just an experiment.

Tomorrow, I will give you the answer. It’s a mystery thriller.

The Second Rule of Selling

Forget the Competition

Forget the competition. That’s right. Forget the competition it doesn’t matter, selling is just a numbers game.

There’s always competition. According to Amazon they have something like 5 million books available to choose from. So how do you get your book to sell? The simple answer is self-promotion. You can’t visit every prospective lead, but you can publicise your spiel and close.

Think about it, unless you tell as many people as possible about your book how the hell can they buy it? And I don’t mean spam. You have to understand your market and who are the likely leads. When you know that you focus on that.

Give me an Olympic gold for effort because the world is full of great ideas, but without action they are just ideas.

Ask any successful salesperson and they will tell you it’s just a numbers game. In fact, it’s all about how often you can keep your mouth shut and for how long. The first person to speak loses.

I was always good at that. Keeping my mouth shut. Sometimes the silence after a close was like being in a crowded elevator when you know someone’s shit themselves. You can’t stand it and you don’t want to breathe.

Hey, don’t bin this, recycle it. Selling is just a numbers game.

PS. I have to get back to work, I can smell the coffee.

It’s Never Too Late

The Bookshop Guru

I was 42 years old when I made the first steps towards obtaining my degree and just five years later I had graduated. I was a late starter, you could say; I didn’t have the opportunity to go to university when I was younger, so being a mature student meant I had the experience and insight to help others. I have compiled this book of my experience and skills I gained through my years at university so that you can reach your goals too.

The practicable knowledge of understanding the needs of students I gained as a student representative, a role that gave me first-hand experience of the problems that students face.

As mature or teenage students you will face the same problems overcoming the stress that succeeding will place on you as I had. Maybe this will be the first time that you have faced this kind of stress. Either way, understanding and dealing with stress is about planning for that future success which I will show you through my experience.

Every great achievement is about making a plan, a road map for success. I know students lead busy lives, so I have tried to keep this book as minimal as possible. By reading this book you will discover how to gain the success you seek rather than falling prey to failure.

Read my book "How to Pass a Degree with Confidence" and believe in yourself and do not be afraid of failure.

The seed of your potential is unlimited. There exists in all of us much potential to discover. The potential to fulfil your aims and goals is just the beginning of the road of many steps we take along life’s journey of discovery. When we unleash our potential and believe in it we will then travel along very different roads to our eventual goals. Embarking on this route to new knowledge will let emerge an inner peace, which allows us to develop a deeper confidence in ourselves.

Success is about understanding failure and also about not worrying if you do. Many successful people will tell you that they have failed lots of times, before they reached what some of their peers would class as success. The conquest of reaching the summit of Mount Everest is an example of how people who failed in their attempts never gave up hope.

Every chapter in this book is written to give you the tools to accomplish your goal of obtaining a higher education qualification. Each chapter is essential reading to master the skills to not only get your degree, but also to excel. One of the main topics I feel is so important is confidence. Many people in general lack confidence in their ability to cope with new challenges that present themselves. I hope through my experience you will learn how to master the skill of inner confidence which will not only help in your studies, but also when dealing with everyday stress. The pressure our friends and family exert on us to succeed can be, for many, an unbearable burden and one that sometimes leads to unnecessary tragedy.

The First Rule of Selling

The Bookshop Guru

The First Rule of Selling

Forget the Price

Forget the price. Yes, that’s right. Forget the price. It doesn’t matter; leave that decision to the customer and the market.

I believe when you pay for something you appreciate it more, so why give it away for free? Unless of course you are being mugged, or when there is a very good reason for giving it away for free such as marketing to the media and the press.

In a previous life I can remember winning prizes for having the highest average sales per order as a salesman in a year. Do you want to know how I achieved that? Do you want the short or long version? They say size doesn’t matter, but try telling that to your partner.

Anyhow, here goes the short version because I like things as simple as possible. I had only been with the company for just over a year when I achieved the highest average sales per order as a salesman. I was surprised because I hadn't set out to achieve this, but the prizes were very welcome at the time. Now, the company had many thousands of employees both on the factory floor and out there flogging the stuff. I was one of many hundreds flogging the stuff. I had previously worked for various national companies selling a whole range of different products and each company had their induction sales training which for some companies was good, others not so.

The philosophy of this national company in terms of selling their product was twofold. First sell the customer the cheap low cost product and work upwards from there. The company considered it was easier to sell their cheap product range first.

You see, the company produced both a low cost economy range, and a more expensive luxury range. So, their salespersons were trained this way. But, I decided I would always start at the top of the price range and work backwards if I had to. And I can count the number of times on my fingers I had to do that, it was very few in a year. The reason I did this was for many reasons. I considered I was selling a better product to the customer even though it cost more to them. And of course I wanted to make more money. I can honestly say most of the time I never mentioned to the customer that the company did an economy range; I felt the customer may be embarrassed if I did. Besides, the customers were happy and I knew they were buying a better product and one which they could afford.

Anthony Fox © Life Skills Cartoon 2012

So, you see price never comes into the equation. It’s a misnomer.

I remember someone once said, “If you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it.”

Hey, don’t bin this, recycle it.
